How to Connect with Your Inner Child

Inner child work is something I learned in Psychotherapy many years ago.

We all have within us a child of every age we ever were, and working with those parts of ourselves can be incredibly useful. Understanding who we once were and how our past experienced shaped us is insightful.

Using a simple written question and answer dialogue, as if you were talking to another person, you can have a conversation with any of those parts of yourself.

Proven Methods for Dealing with Anxiety

18/12/2019

In the lead up to, and during menopause, I have suffered from anxiety, which at times has been most unpleasant.

Being someone who does not like taking prescription medications, and someone is sensitive and who has had reactions to many, both prescription and non-prescription (as my father did), I prefer to explore and learn natural and holistic remedies.

Of course this takes time and effort.

Navigating the Matrix of Maintenance

It's taken me 17 months to lose 15kg.

Yes, I know, that's incredibly slow.

But you know what? It's stayed off. And that's a first.

I've not used pills, drinks, diets or deprivation.

For now, I've decided to maintain my current weight. At some point, I may decide to lose more, but right now, my intuition is saying, "Take a break". So I am.

How I Learned to be Discerning with My Time & Energy

I don't know about you, but the older I get the more discerning I'm becoming with my time and energy.

These days my preference is to be at home in my own peaceful surroundings than to be out and about for the sake of it.

But I wasn't always this way.

With a constant need to fill my time with doing, doing and more doing, I was exhausted.

And, I now know I was running from my feelings. I was trying to escape the silence.

How Do You Talk to Yourself

You know I have noticed that I don't always talk kindly to myself in my head.

Lately, in terms of my weight loss and how I feel about my body, it's definitely improving and I often catch myself telling myself that I look good in something, but my inner dialogue certainly isn't as encouraging as it could be in other areas.

How about you?

Many of us are in the same boat. So, I have been doing a bit of research around this and I have come up with a strategy that is helping.

The Joy of Feeling Unpleasant Emotions

Many of us were brought up not to feel. You may have had messages like, "Stop crying or I'll give you something to cry about" or "Why are you so miserable?" or "Why can't you be grateful?" or "Nice girls don't get angry.", or similar.

The focus here is not to criticise those who gave those messages, not at all; our parents or caregivers did the best they could. It is however, to explain how powerful our negative emotions can be. If, we can find the courage to face and feel them, until we get relief, we will find joy on the other side.

Wind the clock back 30 years and I was a broken, insecure sad young woman who had her life ahead of her, but was unable to see that.

How I Use Visual Cues to Remember Things

New habits can be difficult to start in more ways than one.

The biggest issue I have is actually remembering. Yes, I know, I shouldn't forget if it's actually me who has come up with the idea in the first place, but my memory is just not that great. Even something as simple as going for a walk can be something that I can easily forget to do. However, I am very aware that this forgetting can often be coming as a result of subconscious self-sabotage. But that's another blog post.

Today I wanted to talk about what some of the visual reminders are that I use to make sure I do not forget.

The Daily Plan

Over the years I have tried almost every diet known to man. And I've tried losing weight by just reducing what I eat, but none of it has worked long term; I have always put the weight back on. This is the year I change that.

Now, I'm no a new weight loss journey.

This time around it's way more than that though. This time it's about a more holistic approach to my entire health and well-being. It's about Taking Care of Me.

As you may or may not know, I'm a 54-year old post-menopausal woman. I run my own business from home, and like many women my age, I struggle with putting myself first.

I don't do New Year's resolutions.

Yes, you read that correctly - I've kept to my New Year's resolution for 10 years now (or it could be longer).

With the new year approaching, like many people, I would put great thought into what my New Year's resolution was going to be. And yes, you guessed it, more often than not it would be about diet and exercise.

Each year I would start off on January 1 with a hiss and a roar with some extreme diet and exercise regime that in hindsight I was never going to be able to sustain. And ultimately, a few weeks later, I would fail miserably, and feel terrible about myself and what I could achieve.

Until I came up with a new approach...
